Message from the Trustee
December 2016

During this Advent Season, as we prepare our hearts for the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ, I would like to take this opportunity to thank parents and guardians for choosing a Catholic education for your children.

As we approach Christmas, it’s a good time to reflect on the very busy, but very successful start to the school year. Our schools enjoy strong relationships with our families, local parishes and the community at large, and continue to be safe, caring, healthy and inclusive places to learn and to work. We continue to see strong performances by our students across the board in terms of EQAO scores and graduation rates, which are among the highest in the province. But we’re not resting on our laurels by any means, and we continue to work hard to make sure that each student has every opportunity to achieve success.

As we celebrate this sacred season, I thank you again for supporting Catholic education, and wish you all a Blessed Christmas and a happy and prosperous New Year.

Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP)
January 2017

If your child is currently in Grade 12, you should know that applications are now open for college and university programs. The last date for university applications is January 11th. College applications for the fall term should be submitted before February 1st.

Your child may benefit from financial assistance for postsecondary education from the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP). As part of the most significant reform of student assistance in North America, the government of Ontario is removing the financial barriers to attending college or university.

If your family income is under $50,000, your child’s tuition is covered. Even if you earn more, the new OSAP is still there to help with generous grants that will make sending your child to college or university more affordable.

The Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Development has launched a new online calculator to help students and their families find out quickly and easily whether they qualify for free tuition or other grants and supports from the province. We encourage you to find out more at ontario.ca/osap.

Message from the Superintendent
September 2016

Greetings from Max Vecchiarino
Brampton North-East Family of Schools

Welcome to a new school year – and a warm greeting to those students who are beginning their education in the Dufferin-Peel community! As Superintendent, I am excited to be a part of this vibrant and diverse community once again. The Brampton North-East Family consists of twenty-three schools – four secondary and nineteen elementary – working together with our six parishes to support our students’ faith formation, learning and well-being. Four trustees represent our family: Anna Da Silva, Frank Di Cosola, Darryl D'Souza and Shawn Xaviour – each a strong and dedicated advocate for our students and our schools, and for Catholic Education, which represents both our promise and our hope. Our collective hope is that you find your child(ren)’s school to be a safe, caring, healthy and inclusive learning environment, focused on students’ achievement of the Ontario Catholic School Graduate Expectations.

Our life is a journey, Pope Francis reminds us – and our staff work collaboratively to support our young people, along the way, in developing their gifts, so that this year’s theme for Catholic Education Week, Walking Forward Together, is particularly apt. As parents, guardians and ‘first’ educators, you are witnesses to the wonder and anticipation that nourishes each child’s formation.

Education is a co-operative endeavour. As parents and guardians, you play a foundational and essential role in your child(ren)’s success. We look forward to working alongside you in setting high expectations for learning, achievement, and well-being – a driving force to motivate a child, in terms of participation in all aspects of school life, study habits and grades, and the achievement of their fullest potential, in all areas. There are many ways to do this: by talking with your child(ren) about their interests, aspirations and dreams and their life at school; by fostering a love of learning about God’s creation; by supervising homework; and, as possible, by limiting disruptions.

Our faculty have worked hard in preparing for the upcoming school year. Administrative teams are prepared to ensure that programming and safety are paramount. We welcome your involvement, support and suggestions, as we strive, together, to form an ever stronger home and school partnership, a foundational under-pinning of the Strategic System Plan of our Board of Trustees.

I take this opportunity to wish all our students a successful school year and all of God’s blessings to the community as a whole.

ECO Week
April 17-21, 2017

The ECO Club and several classes sponsored ECO Week, a series of Ecological initiatives and information opportunities. It actually started with the Great Gulp, where students brought in their water bottles and filled up at the new and improved fresh water fountains, and students were able to purchase them during ECO Week as well. It included Earth Hour, where classes turned off the lights for an hour to save a bit of power. On April 20, students left the school and did some tree planting. On April 21, students cleaned up the grounds around the Aquinas campus, filling dozens of bags.

Clubs at Aquinas

St. Thomas Aquinas has the largest student population of any other Catholic high school in Brampton. As such, the 2000 plus students of STA have numerous opportunities to engage in a variety array of clubs and extra-curriculars during their formative years at high school.

From clubs that promote friendly competition like school reach and debate club, to groups that allow students to ply their natural gifts like Hip Hop, Jazz and various dance clubs, there are many clubs that allow students to simply share their interests, whether it be music, working on layout for the school newspaper and yearbook, conducting experiments in chemistry or even working out in the weight-room with friends and supervised by teachers.

The diversity of clubs at St. Thomas Aquinas literally offers a little something for everyone. And if students are interested in starting even more clubs they can try to find a teacher supervisor or two, write a proposal and start-up. They would even have support from our overarching club: the student elected, student engaged, Student Council.

On the following chart are a list of the clubs and extra-curriculars currently running at STA. You will find as diverse a list of possibilities for students as possible to be engaged with events and activities happening, literally, every day of the school, all year long.

Clubs Chart 2016-2017

Have a look at the list, sign-up for something and become a vital part of YOUR school community. You’ll be glad you did. Click on a link below to find information on the clubs in your area of interest.
